Angola’s secretary of state for foreign affairs has expressed great optimism that the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) under the presidency of Iran will take great steps to restore global peace.
“NAM can play a role and we are very optimist that from now on and with the new presidency of Iran … we can have great achievements especially in what is related with the maintenance of peace,” Manuel Augusto said in an interview with on Wednesday on the sidelines of the NAM ministerial meeting in the Iranian capital, Tehran.
He said that Iran as the president of the NAM can play a “vital role” in advancing the objectives of the movement and added that the high turnout in the Tehran summit shows that the member states have confidence in Iran's presidency.
He said that the “main purpose of the Non-Aligned Movement is the prevalence of peace, justice and equality in the world,” adding that given the changes in the international arena, NAM has to readapt its role while making maintenance of peace, justice, equality and development its main priority.
More than 100 countries are partaking in the NAM meeting which kicked off at the expert level in Tehran on Sunday.
The two-day foreign ministerial meeting of the NAM summit began on Tuesday. The meeting of the heads of state will open on Thursday with an inaugural speech by Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.
